🔢 Enter your numbers

Enter up to 1,000 numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Negative values and decimals are supported. Use a period for decimals, such as 12.5.

⚙️ How it works

The arithmetic mean is the sum of all numbers divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value after sorting, and the mode is the most frequently occurring value.

Calculations are performed in your browser. No account or submission is required.

🧠 How to calculate an average

The arithmetic mean is calculated by adding all values and dividing by the number of values. It is one of the most common ways to describe the centre of a dataset.

Mean = Sum of values ÷ Number of values

The median is the middle number after sorting values from smallest to largest. If there are two middle numbers, the median is their average.

The mode is the value that appears most frequently. A dataset can have one mode, several modes or no mode.

🧮 Example: Finding the average of five numbers

Suppose your numbers are 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30.

Add them together to get 100, then divide by five. The arithmetic mean is 20. The median is also 20, and the range is 20.

➗ Mean: 20 · Median: 20 · Range: 20

🎓 How weighted averages work

A weighted average gives some values more influence than others. This is useful when assignments, exams or other components contribute different amounts toward a final result.

Weighted average = Sum of (Value × Weight) ÷ Sum of weights

For example, scores of 80, 90 and 70 with weights of 20%, 30% and 50% produce a weighted average of 78.

💡 Frequently Asked Questions

➗ Is mean the same as average?

In everyday use, average usually refers to the arithmetic mean. In statistics, average can also refer more broadly to measures such as the median and mode.

🎯 What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean uses every value in a calculation. The median is the middle value after sorting, making it less sensitive to extreme observations.

🔁 Can a dataset have more than one mode?

Yes. If multiple values share the highest frequency and occur more than once, they are all modes. If every value occurs equally often, this calculator reports no mode.

🎓 How do I calculate a weighted average grade?

Multiply each grade by its corresponding weight, add the products and divide by the sum of the weights. The weighted mode above handles these steps automatically.

📉 Can averages include negative numbers?

Yes. The mean, median and other statistics can be calculated using positive numbers, negative numbers, zero and decimals.
