Mulch Calculator
Better gardens start with better planning.
Find out how much mulch you need for your garden beds and landscaping projects. Enter your measurements and desired depth to estimate cubic yards, bags and material costs.
📏 Enter your garden measurements
💡 For irregularly shaped beds, divide the area into smaller rectangles and add the estimates. This calculator assumes a uniform mulch depth.
🌱 Extra allowance
A small allowance can help cover measurement differences and uneven spreading. The default is 5%.
📦 Bag size and pricing
Enter your local supplier’s prices. Bag and bulk prices are examples, not live quotes. Switching currency changes the display label only.
🧠 How to calculate how much mulch you need
Multiply the length and width of your garden bed to find its area. Convert your desired mulch depth into the same unit as your measurements, then multiply the area by the depth to calculate volume.
For imperial measurements, divide depth in inches by 12 to convert it to feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to find cubic yards. For bagged mulch, divide the required volume by the volume per bag and round up to a whole bag.
🧮 Example: Mulching a garden bed
Imagine a garden bed measuring 20 feet long by 10 feet wide, with mulch spread to a depth of 3 inches.
The garden covers 200 square feet. At 3 inches deep, it needs 50 cubic feet of mulch before extra allowance.
With an additional 5%, the required volume becomes 52.5 cubic feet, or approximately 1.94 cubic yards.
💡 Frequently Asked Questions
For many landscape beds, a 2–3 inch layer is a common recommendation. Appropriate depth varies by mulch type, soil and plant needs. Avoid excessive buildup around stems and tree trunks.
One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. That’s equivalent to 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet each, so you’d need 14 whole bags to purchase at least one cubic yard.
Bulk mulch may cost less per cubic yard, particularly for larger projects. However, delivery charges, minimum quantities and convenience can change which option is more economical.
Yes. Use the identical-beds field when dimensions match. For different shapes and sizes, calculate each separately and combine the total volumes.
No. Keep mulch away from direct contact with trunks and plant stems to reduce excessive moisture buildup and other potential problems.
