⚙️ Calculation assumptions
Commissions are calculated on the sales revenue entered, before returns, cancellations or other adjustments. Flat commissions apply one rate to all sales; progressive tiers apply different rates to successive portions of revenue.
This is a gross earnings estimate before payroll deductions, taxes, benefits and expenses. It does not model commission caps, clawbacks or custom compensation agreements.
🧠 How to calculate sales commission
A sales commission is compensation based on sales performance. Some businesses pay a single percentage on all eligible sales, while others use progressive rates that increase as sales pass certain thresholds.
For progressive tiered commissions, calculate the commission earned within each sales band and add the amounts together.
🧮 Example: Earning commission on $50,000 in sales
Suppose you generate $50,000 in sales and earn a flat 5% commission. Your commission is $2,500.
If you also receive $3,000 in base pay and a $500 bonus for reaching your sales target, your total gross earnings are $6,000.
💡 Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply eligible sales by 0.05. For example, a 5% commission on $20,000 in sales is $1,000.
In a progressive tiered structure, different portions of sales earn different rates. For example, the first $20,000 might earn 3%, the next $20,000 might earn 5%, and sales above $40,000 might earn 7%.
Commission is generally calculated using the eligible sales basis defined in your compensation agreement. Payroll deductions and income taxes are separate from the gross commission calculation.
Some compensation plans award a fixed bonus after a sales target is achieved. This calculator assumes the full bonus is earned when sales equal or exceed the target.
Not in this calculator. Base pay is added to the calculated commission and any earned bonus to estimate total gross earnings.
