⛽ Vehicle fuel efficiency

💡 In Canada, vehicle fuel consumption is commonly measured in litres per 100 kilometres. A lower L/100 km number means less fuel used. With MPG or km/L, a higher number means better efficiency.

💰 Fuel price and cost sharing

Enter the actual pump price in your selected currency and unit. Currency selection changes the label only; it does not convert exchange rates. Cost sharing divides fuel expenses equally among the number of people entered.

⚙️ Calculation assumptions

The estimate assumes a consistent average fuel consumption rate and fuel price throughout the journey. Round trips are assumed to cover twice the one-way distance.

Actual fuel consumption can vary with traffic, terrain, weather, speed, vehicle load and driving conditions. Tolls, parking, maintenance and vehicle depreciation are excluded.

🧠 How to calculate fuel cost for a trip

To estimate fuel costs, you need three things: the distance you’re driving, your vehicle’s average fuel consumption and the price of fuel.

For a vehicle rated in litres per 100 kilometres, divide the distance by 100, multiply by the consumption rate, and then multiply the litres required by the price per litre.

Fuel cost = (Distance in km ÷ 100) × L/100 km × Price per litre

🧮 Example: A 250 km road trip

Suppose you’re driving 250 kilometres in a vehicle that uses 8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Gas costs $1.60 per litre.

The trip requires 20 litres of fuel, costing $32 one way. If you return along the same route, the total fuel cost doubles to $64.

⛽ $32 one way · $64 round trip

🚗 Understanding L/100 km and MPG

Litres per 100 kilometres measures how much fuel a vehicle consumes over a fixed distance. Miles per gallon measures how far it travels on one gallon of fuel.

US and UK gallons are different sizes, so MPG (US) and MPG (UK) are not interchangeable. Our calculator accounts for both.

💡 Frequently Asked Questions

⛽ How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?

Multiply the distance by your fuel consumption rate to determine fuel needed, then multiply by the price per unit of fuel. The calculator performs these conversions automatically.

🚗 How much does it cost to drive 100 km?

At 8 L/100 km and $1.60 per litre, the fuel cost is $12.80 per 100 km. Actual costs depend on your vehicle and local fuel prices.

🔄 Does the calculator support round trips?

Yes. Check the return-trip option to double the one-way distance. The calculation assumes the return journey covers the same distance and has the same average fuel efficiency.

📏 What’s the difference between US MPG and UK MPG?

A UK imperial gallon contains approximately 4.546 litres, while a US liquid gallon contains approximately 3.785 litres. The same MPG number therefore represents different fuel consumption rates.

👥 Can I split fuel costs between passengers?

Yes. Enter the number of people sharing the cost. The calculator divides the total estimated fuel expense equally between them.

⚡ Does this calculator work for electric vehicles?

This version is designed for petrol and diesel vehicles. Electric vehicles use energy consumption measurements such as kWh/100 km, which require a different cost calculation.
